francisco noya, resident conductor CONDUCTOR FRANCISCO NOYA is a native of Venezuela and began his career in the United States in 1979, receiving both his bachelor’s degree in composition and his Master’s degree in conducting from Boston University in 1989. Mr. Noya has become a prominent figure in the Boston and New England music scene. He served as Music Director of the Longwood Symphony Orchestra in Boston for 13 seasons, Resident Conductor of the Rhode Island Philharmonic for nine seasons and he was a prominent member of the Conducting Faculty of the Berklee College of Music in Boston. He returns to the Rhode Island Philharmonic as Resident Conductor for the 2008-09 season, conducting Education and Summer Pops Series concerts and serving as “cover” conductor for all Classical Series concerts (ready to step in if needed). He will join Music Director Larry Rachleff representing the Philharmonic artistically and educationally throughout the Rhode Island community. Mr. Noya has appeared as guest conductor with orchestras in Brazil, Venezuela, Austria, the Czech Republic, Spain, Italy and the United States including the Baltimore, San Antonio and Omaha Symphony Orchestras. He has served as Assistant Conductor of the Caracas Philharmonic and Assistant to the Music Director of the Teatro Teresa Carreño, one of the most prestigious theaters in Latin America.
He served as Music Director of the Empire State Youth Orchestra in Albany, New York for ten seasons, making his debut in Spain with them in 1993 and returning there in 1994 for a five-city tour. Mr. Noya also led this youth orchestra in concerts both at Carnegie Hall in New York City and in Ozawa Hall at Tanglewood. Mr. Noya is not only an accomplished symphonic conductor, but he is also very active in the opera world, most recently conducting acclaimed performances of both Bellini’s Norma and Verdi’s Aida in the Boston area. In September 1999 Mr. Noya was selected as one of eight conductors to participate in the American Symphony Orchestra League’s National Conductor Preview Program. This showcase placed these promising conductors in the spotlight as they worked with and rehearsed a professional orchestra before orchestra managers seeking new Music Directors.
