Mission
Music School of the Rhode Island Philharmonic actively encourages lifelong involvement with music for all people of Southeastern New England by offering a program of music-based arts education in a nurturing environment. The Music School of the Rhode Island Philharmonic is the largest nonprofit community music school in Rhode Island. As a member of the 230-school National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, The Music School achieved the largest first-year growth in the history of the Guild, from 35 to 350 students. The school now works with over 2500 students statewide.
WHO ATTENDS THE MUSIC SCHOOL? Anyone who loves music is welcome! Our students range in age from 9 months to 80 years old. Some of our students are planning to pursue careers in music, while other are taking classes for their own enjoyment; we value all of our students equally. The Music School of the Rhode Island Philharmonic does not discriminate on the basis of race, ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age or handicap.
WHO TEACHES AT THE MUSIC SCHOOL? The Music School of the Rhode Island Philharmonic employs a teaching staff of over 70 dedicated music educators and performers. Our goal is to match each student with the teacher who best meets the student's needs in terms of music style, experience and personality.
WHAT WE OFFER Students may choose private instruction on many instruments and voice. Classical, Jazz, Rock, Folk and World Music styles are all represented in our curriculum. In addition to individual lessons we offer ensembels of different sizes and levels, from trios and quartets to larger groups like the RIPYWind Ensembles and RIPYJazz Big Band. Our resident orchestral program, the Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Orchestras, includes ensembles designed to develop orchestral skills of school-age musicians at all levels.
Our Early Childhood classes prepare the very young - ages 9 months to 5 years - for a lifelong appreication of music. In addition, more than 100 families participate in our Suzuki program, in which children as young as age 4 may begin formal instruction on violin, cello, piano and guitar.
FINANCIAL AID The Music School of the RI Philharmonic has built a strong financial aid program for young musicians whose families cannot afford to fully finance a music education. Click here for more details on our financial aid application procedure.
