School Partnership Programs

The Music School's school partnership programs bring music education directly to students within the comfort of their own school environment.  Classes are given both in-school and after-school, and have given students the start they need towards reaching Rhode Island state arts proficiency requirements.

Blackstone Academy Charter School, Pawtucket - MetLife Partners in Arts Education Program

Having just completed the third year of our collaboration, Blackstone Academy and the Music School partner to provide students of the charter high school with in-school music education in beginning and advanced Latin percussion, beginning and advanced guitar, keyboard, and chorus.  Through a grant from MetLife, the programs have encouraged students to reach a level of proficiency in music performance through persistence and a regular course of study over the four years they are enrolled at the Academy.  Another exciting aspect of this partnership is that classroom teachers from Blackstone Academy work together with artists from the community to develop an integrated curriculum for two yearly artists in residence programs.  These residencies bring music, theatre and dance into English and history classes, helping students to connect with the subjects through alternative routes.  During this year's residencies, students learned Mande dance and drumming from Mali along with African history and current events, and composed music to be used as a soundtrack to a student-written play.

The MetLife Partners in Arts Education Program is funded by the MetLife Foundation and administered by the National Guild of the Community Schools of the Arts.

Paul Cuffee School, Providence

The Paul Cuffee School, a charter elementary school, has partnered with the Music School over the past two years, offering students in kindergarten through fifth grade after-school music education opportunities.  One of the exciting programs offered at the Paul Cuffee School is a pre-band for fourth and fifth graders, who are learning to play concert band instruments for the first time as a pre-cursor to a typical band program.
