Music for Our Schools
• IN-SCHOOL ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCES:
Philharmonic Orchestra members and Music School faculty comprise more than 20 In School Ensembles. These ensembles travel to area schools to perform and introduce students to various musical styles: Jazz, Classical, World and Folk. All ensembles are interactive and encourage active listening. While all of the groups focus on a particular genre of music, some ensembles further concentrate on specific topics such as composing, improvising and telling a story with music. In addition, our musicians will work with classroom teachers to design residencies and workshops that will enhance their classroom curricula. To read more about the various ensembles please visit our In School Ensembles Page.
• ANNUAL EDUCATION CONCERTS:
Each year, in the spring, the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra presents four schooltime education concerts for students at VMA. In the past few years over 5,000 students annually have enjoyed a variety of concert themes including “Sounds of Nature” (2010), “Dance Around the World” (2009) and “Tunes & Tales” (2008). Tickets are $5.00 for each student, with one free chaperone ticket for every 20 students. Students may attend at no charge from schools in which 80% or more of the student population receive free or reduced lunch. We provide online curriculum guides in advance of the concerts to help teachers prepare students for the concerts. Please check back soon for information about the 2011 concerts.
